Want to practice your approach into Palm Springs International Airport (PSP)? How about trying it behind the controls of AOPA's one-of-a-kind Win a Six in '06 Sweepstakes airplane? You can see the airplane that might be yours at AOPA Expo from November 9 through 11.
But starting right now, any AOPA member can fly the refurbished and updated 1967 Piper Cherokee Six from the comfort of their home on a personal computer - with an exclusive new add-on to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. With this add-on, you can fly all of the approaches into the Palm Springs area using the Garmin and Sandel avionics package.
"Every AOPA member dreams of winning the sweepstakes airplane," said AOPA President Phil Boyer. "The next best thing to owning it is flying it - and now, thanks to our partnering with Flight1 Software, all of our members will have that opportunity."
Free to AOPA members, the virtual Cherokee Six duplicates nearly every detail of the sweepstakes airplane, including the S-Tec System Fifty-Five X autopilot - which includes S-Tec's flight director and altitude preselector - the Sandel SN-3500 electronic horizontal situation indicator, Garmin GNS 530/GNS 430 navigators, Avidyne FlightMax EX500 multifunction display, and J.P. Instruments EDM-930 engine data management system.
The program, developed by Flight1 Software in conjunction with AOPA, requires a personal computer running Windows XP and is intended for use with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (the "Century of Flight" edition); a version optimized for the just-released Microsoft Flight Simulator X is anticipated at a later date. A control yoke or joystick also is needed to fly the Cherokee Six (rudder pedals are optional), and a high-speed Internet connection is strongly recommended to download the program because of its size (approximately 43 MB). For more information or to download the file, see AOPA Online.
This is AOPA's second sweepstakes airplane add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator. More than 22,000 members downloaded the virtual Commander 112A that Flight1 created for AOPA's 2005 Commander Countdown Sweepstakes. If you missed it, the Commander is still available to members for free download.
For more information on the sweepstakes and its Piper Cherokee Six grand prize, see the Win a Six in '06 Sweepstakes Web pages.
