Now that task is easier with the completion of a modest new TV studio located inside AOPA's Frederick, Maryland, headquarters. The single-camera studio uses a satellite uplink to allow AOPA President Phil Boyer and other association officials to get on the air with television stations nationwide in a matter of moments.
"We want the media to get the story right, and news outlets need the information fast--this is one more way we can ensure that reporters get the facts they need and the GA perspective is part of the story," Boyer said. "Nobody understands GA better than AOPA, and it's vital that we share that understanding with the media and the public."
AOPA officials have hundreds of media contacts each year, providing information about GA to reporters working in TV, radio, print, and online.
When U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta addressed members at AOPA Expo 2005 in Tampa, Florida, last November, he urged all pilots to be accountable for their actions in the air and to understand and comply with today's security requirements.
AOPA and the AOPA Air Safety Foundation provide online resources to help you safely navigate today's rapidly changing airspace. You also can learn about airspace in AOPA Flight Training Online's "Resources for Student Pilots" section.
The association offers legal services to members who, despite careful planning and checking notams, inadvertently enter a pop-up temporary flight restriction (TFR). Members enrolled in the AOPA Legal Services Plan can take advantage of free consultation and assistance on covered aviation legal matters, including TFR violations. Private pilot coverage is only $29 per year. For more information or to enroll, call 800/USA-AOPA.
Are you preparing for the sport pilot checkride? Or are you a flight instructor preparing a student for the sport pilot practical test? The AOPA Air Safety Foundation offers an online sport pilot checkride guide. Prospective sport pilots can test their knowledge before taking the checkride with a free ASF Sporty's Safety Quiz on the sport pilot and light sport aircraft rule.
The cost of aircraft renter's insurance has just been reduced for AOPA members, thanks to the efforts of AOPA and the AOPA Insurance Agency. "AOPA members will now receive a 5-percent discount on new renters insurance policies," said Greg Sterling, executive vice president and general manager of the agency. The new AOPA member discount allows members to carry a nonowned policy for as little as $90 per year.
"As the largest light aircraft insurance agency in the country, we were able to work with a major A-rated underwriter to offer this exclusive AOPA member discount," Sterling said.
The member discount will apply to new and renewing policyholders. Plus, members who renew their nonowned policy can obtain an additional 10-percent discount if they were violation- and accident-free within the previous policy year.
Visit the AOPA Insurance Agency Web site to apply and purchase renters insurance, or call 800/622-2672 for more information.
