Don't close Tacoma airport, AOPA says

AOPA is reminding the Tacoma, Washington, city manager - who has publicly suggested selling or closing Tacoma Narrows Airport - that closing the airport right now is not a possibility. "To suggest that closing the airport is an option with the FAA is absurd since the FAA includes the airport in its National Plan for Integrated Airport Systems," AOPA Vice President of Airports Bill Dunn told the manager. Dunn also pointed out that the airport is obligated by grant assurances to remain open until at least 2025. Plus, it serves as a vital part of Washington's aviation system plan and is an economic engine for the local community. The state's 2001 Economic Impact of Washington Airports indicated that the airport's economic impact on Pierce County is more than $20 million per year.
