Schools don't belong near airports, AOPA says

East Noble School Corporation has proposed to build a school within one-half mile of the approach end of Runway 28 at Kendallville Municipal Airport. In fact, the school would be located directly under the downwind-to-base turn in the traffic pattern. AOPA and Airport Support Network volunteer Mike Moffitt have warned the city about the dangers associated with schools being placed near airports and urged the East Noble School Corporation to select a location that would be safer for students and more compatible with the airport. "The land-use incompatibility between the airport and the school will polarize the community to such an extent that it will create significant conflicts for planning, school, city, and county officials," wrote AOPA Senior Liaison of Airports John Collins in a letter to the city. "Any attempt to force coexistence will most likely fail."
