Phil Boyer presented Gov. Sonny Perdue with an AOPA Presidential Citation Wednesday for his support of general aviation through the Airport Initiative in Rural Georgia (AIRGeorgia). The governor's innovative program is aimed at integrating community airports into the state's rural economic development plan. The goal is to extend every rural airport runway to at least 5,000 feet and to ensure that every Georgian is within a 30-minute drive of an airport capable of serving corporate aircraft. The citation notes that AIRGeorgia "demonstrates the value of general aviation in accessing emergency services, enhancing tourism, and supporting the transportation needs of travelers and businesses across the state." Gov. Perdue is no stranger to GA. An active pilot and AOPA member, he told Boyer that using his Bellanca Super Viking [ picture | article] to visit all the rural areas of the state was key to his winning election.
