Minn. aircraft insurance bill moves through legislature
An aircraft insurance bill that AOPA has worked to modify is a step closer to becoming law. Senate File 608 recently passed the Senate 64 to 0 and is expected to pass the House soon. The bill's original minimum liability coverage level of $250,000 per seat has been reduced to $100,000, which is more in line with what most aircraft owners pay for insurance. AOPA members in Minnesota responded to the association's call to action earlier this year and told the legislators to lower the proposed minimum levels. The current legislation also creates a study group, which would include aircraft owner and pilot representation, to research the "absolute" liability issue and report back to the legislature in November. The bill originated from a tragic aircraft accident in which a mother was killed, two young daughters were injured, and an insurer stalled on paying their medical costs.
