Marking a milestone

July was a big month for solos, at least for the participants on the AOPA aviation forums. Several student pilots posted happy accounts of their first solo flights around the pattern, receiving congratulations and words of advice from their fellow AOPA members.

It's a wonderful milestone in the student pilot experience, to be sure. But the ability to fly solo brings sobering new responsibilities as you continue with your flight training. While your flight instructor is responsible for the airplane while you fly together, you become responsible for the airplane when you're flying it solo. The fixed-base operator (FBO) from which you rent your training airplane has insurance. But in most cases, that insurance is in place to protect the FBO--not you, the renter pilot. Should you substantially damage the rental airplane, the FBO's insurance company has a right to subrogate--or make a claim--against a third party who caused the damage. And that's you, the renter pilot.

One way to protect yourself is to purchase your own renter's insurance policy. How to find out more about rental insurance? Start with AOPA's Pilot Information Center (800/USA-AOPA). Our PIC specialists can give you the answers about non-owner insurance. Also see AOPA's Pilots' Guide to Aircraft Insurance, which answers most frequently asked questions about insurance and provides a checklist for insurance shopping.

The AOPA Insurance Agency has a comprehensive liability coverage program that will cover bodily injury, passenger injury, damage to the aircraft, the FBO's loss of revenue, legal costs, and more. Renter's insurance is available for as little as 50 cents per day. Call 800/622-AOPA or see the Web site for more information.
