Kansas senator receives AOPA award for GA support

AOPA has named Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts the winner of the prestigious J.B. “Doc” Hartranft Award for 2008 Phil Boyer with J.B. “Doc” Hartranft Award winner Sen. Pat Roberts.

AOPA has named Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts the winner of the prestigious J.B. “Doc” Hartranft Award for 2008, for his longtime support of general aviation.

AOPA President Phil Boyer presented the award in person to Sen. Roberts in his home state on Oct. 14, saying, “Pat Roberts is an active, vocal, and passionate supporter of general aviation. That was never more evident than over the past two years when the FAA and the airlines were pressing hard to create a user-fee funded system that could have sounded the death-knell for general aviation.

“Sen. Roberts worked tirelessly to make sure that his colleagues truly understood the issue and its implications for the U.S. air transportation system,” Boyer said.

The Joseph B. “Doc” Hartranft Award is named for AOPA’s first employee and president of the association for 38 years.  It is awarded annually to the federal, state, or local government official who has made the most significant contribution during the year on behalf of general aviation.
