Large TFRs in effect for political conventions

Similar to the Democratic National Convention, the FAA has issued notams for large, presidential-like temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) for the Republican Convention, from Sept. 1 through 4 in Minneapolis-St. Paul.

Pilots should note that there are additional security requirements for accessing Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport (MSP) and St. Paul Downtown Holman Field (STP) while the TFRs are active. Pilots need to apply for a waiver at least 96 hours in advance and operate from a specified gateway airport. Transportation Security Administration screening will be required prior to departing any of the gateway airports for either MSP or STP.

The Continental U.S. NORAD (CONR) Region is partnering with the U.S. Secret Service and the FAA to help reduce airspace violations. Public and private airports within 100 miles of the convention sites will display CONR posters, reminding pilots of the TFRs. CONR fighters will also be on alert during that period for enforcement duties.

Because TFR airspace frequently changes, AOPA strongly encourages pilots to obtain a briefing and check notams before every flight. TFR violators will be intercepted and forced to land.
