The Air Force has proposed establishing a temporary military operations area (TMOA) near Playas, N.M., but AOPA is asking why the airspace is needed when it is adjacent to a large special-use airspace complex that could be used instead. The Air Force wants the airspace from Dec. 1 through 12 at altitudes from 300 feet agl through Flight Level 180 for a large-scale training exercise. AOPA is concerned because the proposed TMOA would close sections of three Victor airways: V66, V16, and V198. Past experience has shown that TMOAs can become permanent—a process that is under way in Alaska. AOPA will submit comments opposing the plan before the Sept. 8 deadline.
