Garmin recently introduced a new handheld GPS called the GPSMAP 495 into its extensive product line. The 495 is a unique offering within the Garmin line that fills a niche market. The basic processor and features are those of the 496, but the price point is more in line with that of the 296.
As with the 496, buyers have the option of purchasing a unit that comes loaded with the Americas, Atlantic, or Pacific database. Having the option of three databases is crucial because the 495 lacks one important feature of the 496, namely the ability to connect with XM weather. Because XM doesn't have coverage in Alaska or the rest of the world, Garmin needed a product that had the update speed and features of the 496 with a lower price tag. The only other feature that differentiates the 495 from the 496 is the lack of preloaded street maps, although they are available as an option.
While the 495 is significantly cheaper than the 496, it can never be upgraded with XM weather capability. And with the street map upgrade kit priced at $249.99, the gap in price is significantly reduced.

There are many electronic logbooks on the market, each with different features and capabilities. For quick, intuitive use; broad range of features; and wide range of appeal to different pilot groups, it's hard to beat the new Web-based AVLogbook.
Presented as an electronic set of file folders, the logbook's main page allows quick and easy flight entries.
With the logbook's autofill feature, it takes only two field entries--destination airport and Hobbs time--to enter a flight. The type of aircraft, N-number, departure airport, and Hobbs time out are saved from the previous entry. The logbook will accept more advanced information, such as instrument approaches and condition of flight.
Basic logbook entries are just the beginning of the application's features, however. For flight instructors, AVLogbook will autofill the student's logbook, keep track of and generate invoices, and monitor currency and other student information. It's one of the logbook's best features.
AVLogbook also has features for aspiring professional pilots. Enter the flight and select the contract pilot option, and it will automatically direct the user to an invoice page. From here, simply enter the expense info and AVLogbook will print out an invoice with the flight information and applicable expenses.
Finally, because it's Web-based, there's no software to download--or information to lose--when a home PC crashes. Also, entries can be made from any computer, or even a portable handheld device.
Price: $85 for lifetime use
