Protect yourself with AOPA's Legal Services Plan

During the fun and excitement of learning to fly, we may not consider the larger ramifications of our actions. Instead we focus on the specific tasks at hand, such as slow flight, stalls, and landings. But what happens if one of those landings happens before the tower clears the airplane to do so? Call upon the AOPA Legal Services Plan for help in getting out of this jam, and many other aviation legal matters.

The Legal Services Plan is a unique benefit to AOPA members that entitles the plan member to a number of different legal resources. Think of it as inexpensive protection for your pilot certificate. The plan covers a number of different areas, from assistance with an aircraft purchase or sale, and certain federal tax issues, to U.S. Customs issues and medical certificate suspensions or revocations. But the most often used benefit, and the one that provides the best value within the plan, is representation for FAA enforcement actions. Remember, once you earn your certificate, the responsibility is completely yours.

Here's how it works: Become a full AOPA member and enroll in the plan for $29 a year. For instructors, the fee is $55 a year. Then, if you believe something happened that might subject you to an enforcement action, or if you simply want to have assistance with the terms of a rental agreement, call AOPA and ask to use the plan. You'll be referred to a Legal Services Plan counselor with expertise in aviation who will work for you under the terms of the plan. It's that easy.

Many AOPA members consider the AOPA Legal Services Plan one of the best membership benefits--and with good reason. For complete details on plan coverages and limitations, see the Plan Description. For more information or to enroll, see AOPA Online.
