It’s been more than 35 years since Georgia opened a new airport, but that is all about to change. On Nov. 14, Paulding County Regional will open with a 5,500-foot runway and the distinction of being the first public airport ever to open in Paulding County, Ga., northwest of Atlanta.
Even though it isn’t open yet, Paulding County Regional already has an AOPA Airport Support Network volunteer, John Betsill, who is actively promoting the airport and the economic benefits it will bring to the region as a much-needed GA reliever airport for the Atlanta area. And the comprehensive master plan for the airport, which includes a business park and room for future runway expansion, earned the county the 2007 Excellence in Economic Development Award from the U.S. Economic Development Administration.
“It is always exciting to see a new airport opening, especially when it is accompanied by good land-use planning to fend off the noise and encroachment problems that so often lead to airport closures,” said Heidi Williams, AOPA senior director of airports.
AOPA will be on hand to participate in the airport opening, which will be marked with a ribbon cutting ceremony, airshow, and fireworks display.
