AOPA members can now get free, Web-based e-mail as an AOPA member benefit, according to a new program announced at AOPA Expo 2000 in Long Beach, California.
The new "AOPA.net" service is available to AOPA members through the members-only section of AOPA Online.
"AOPA members can access their e-mail—and other AOPA.net services—anytime from any computer connected to the Internet," said Karen Detert, AOPA senior vice president for products and services.
"And the best part is that you'll show your support for general aviation and for AOPA with your AOPA e-mail address on every message that you send."
AOPA members will be able to choose their own preferred e-mail name, which will end in "@aopa.net."
The full-featured AOPA.net service (provided in cooperation with TargitMail.com) offers HTML-enabled messages allowing selection of special fonts and backgrounds. Messages can be classified into user-customizable folders. AOPA members will have three megabytes of free storage on AOPA.net.
The system can be set to notify the user of new e-mail by (1) pager, (2) "instant messaging," or (3) by sending an e-mail to an alternate address. The user can also set various filters to block unwanted e-mail.
All of the features of a personal information manager are available to the AOPA member from any computer on the Web, at no cost. AOPA.net services will also include an appointment calendar, contacts manager, and a "to-do" list.
All of the member's information is protected by a user-selected password.
AOPA members who chose to use AOPA.net will be asked complete a personal preferences and interests questionnaire. Based on that information, the member may receive occasional, highly targeted information related to the member's specified interests.
"AOPA's partnership with TargitMail allows us to provide these AOPA.net services at absolutely no cost to the member," said Detert.
"It also provides a small royalty to AOPA that helps keep member dues low and general aviation strong."
