New AOPA Auto Insurance Program to offer lower rates, special aviation-related enhancements for pilots

Beginning in January, AOPA members will be eligible to participate in special AOPA-certified automobile insurance with aviation-related enhancements and low rates.

AOPA Senior Vice President for Products and Services Karen Detert offered a preview of the program at AOPA Expo 2000 in Long Beach. This new auto insurance program will be underwritten by member companies of American International Group, Inc. (AIG), the leading U.S.-based international insurance and financial services organization.

"AIG member companies recognize that pilots understand the importance of safety. That also makes them better drivers," said Detert. "This also means AOPA members are a 'better risk' and therefore deserve special rates and services."

AOPA members purchasing the auto policy can also qualify to obtain up to $5 million aviation liability limits from AIG member companies through the AOPA Insurance Agency.

The AOPA-Certified Auto Insurance Program will offer specific enhancements available only to pilots. If your car is damaged in an airport parking lot while you're piloting an aircraft, the policy will waive up to $250 of the policy deductible.

Moreover, if your aircraft malfunctions and leaves you stranded, the policy will pay up to $900 in ground or air transportation expenses necessary to get you home.

Full details of the AOPA Certified Auto Insurance Program will be announced in January when the program begins.

The program is one of the many AOPA Certified Services that return a royalty to AOPA at no additional cost to the buyer. These royalties help keep AOPA dues low and provide additional support for programs such as the AOPA Airport Support Network.
