In an effort to increase air traffic efficiency and safety, the FAA has created a new T-route (T-276) that will allow pilots on IFR flight plans in aircraft with IFR-certified GPS receivers to bypass the busy Portland, Ore., Class C airspace.
AOPA had commented in support of the T-route, while some local members raised concerns about possible upslope icing in the area.
“The FAA Western Service Center did a commendable job of halting the rulemaking process to address the concerns directly with the pilots who commented,” said Pete Lehmann, AOPA manager of air traffic services.
The FAA and AOPA agreed to conduct outreach to pilots, explaining the dangers of upslope icing and how they relate to the particular T-route. The final rule erroneously states that AOPA will publish an article on the subject in the September issue of AOPA Pilot. Instead, it will be published in November.
The T-route will be effective and available for use on Nov. 20.
