Angel Flight West, a regional affiliate of the nationwide network of volunteer pilots, announced recently that it is providing fuel discounts for volunteers. The fuel discount program is meant to offset the cost of fuel for pilots flying missions and is currently available in the Albuquerque and Phoenix areas.
The organization said it expects additional discounts to be available throughout its 13-state region as soon as it can raise the necessary funds and contract with fuel providers.
The discount works by using grants to prebuy fuel from the local supplier. Thus far the fuel supplier has matched the donation and further reduced the price of fuel to Angel Flight pilots.
“Our volunteer pilots donate everything—their airplanes, time, and funds to help those in need of air transportation to health care facilities,” says Alan M. Dias, executive director of Angel Flight West. “However, the increased costs of flying, along with the downturn in the economy, have impacted the number of pilots who can afford to fly missions. Developing this fuel discount program will continue our efforts to provide essential human services.”
