The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association is general aviation's advocate and the largest, most influential aviation association in the world. Its membership of more than 414,000 comprises nearly two-thirds of all pilots in the United States. Visit and bookmark our Web site designed especially to serve the information needs of student pilots (ft.aopa.org). All AOPA Flight Training members, including those with free six-month introductory memberships, have full access to AOPA's resources, including the members-only areas of AOPA Flight Training Online and AOPA Online.

A Flight Path that pays

AOPA launched a new initiative in early April designed to help you as a student pilot stay engaged in your flight training, and to keep you moving toward your goal of earning a pilot certificate.

The new Flight Path program features a series of 24 informative, motivational e-mails tailored to the stages of an individual's interest in becoming a pilot-from an initial curiosity about flying through completion of the checkride, and even to flying after training for your initial pilot certificate has been completed. Included in each e-mail are links to relevant online AOPA educational resources related to that stage of flight training. One message is sent automatically every three weeks, based on average progress through the curriculum-but participants can adjust the timing to receive the e-mails more or less frequently, and can request that a message about a specific topic be sent (or resent) at any time.

At certain training milestones-taking your first flight, obtaining your student pilot certificate (which for aspiring private and recreational pilots also is your medical certificate), completing your first solo flight, completing the FAA knowledge test, and passing your checkride-participants earn a chance in Flight Path's monthly sweepstakes. Five $1,000 cash awards and two $100 Sporty's Pilot Shop gift certificates will be awarded each month through December. The AOPA Foundation is funding the cash awards.

The program provides each participant an online My Flight Path page where they can track their progress, submit training milestones, and request any of the 24 e-mails that they would like to receive. In the program's first month, more than 6,000 people logged into the Flight Path Web site, and 3,100 students submitted training milestones.
