As the weather warms up, many pilots, like the birds, get the urge to fly north. From May through September, AOPA answers phone and e-mail inquiries from pilots asking what is needed to fly across the border into Canada. Many of the requirements for border crossing remain the same; however, this year there are a couple of important new aspects to consider.
First is eAPIS, which is Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP’s) Electronic Advance Passenger Information System. Effective May 18, 2009, pilots who fly internationally are required to provide passenger manifests to CBP when departing from and arriving back in the United States using this electronic reporting system.
Next is the English proficient endorsement. Effective March 5, 2009, the FAA mandated compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) rule that all member countries (including the United States) issue pilot certificates that state the pilot is English proficient if that pilot plans to use the certificate outside of his or her home country. You can request a replacement certificate with the endorsement from the FAA’s Airmen Online Services.
Call AOPA’s Pilot Information Center (800-USA-AOPA) with questions, and read more about flying to Canada in AOPA’s online Answers for Pilots.
“I am excited to announce the AOPA Aviation Summit, a completely new take on AOPA’s annual convention gathering,” AOPA President Craig Fuller announced recently. “We want to help you connect to the reasons that you fly so you can maximize the value you get from your personal aviation experience, whether you fly for business, pleasure, or both.”
AOPA Aviation Summit will still offer the great experiences attendees have come to expect: more than 500 exhibits and an exciting aircraft display. The exhibit hall will be energized with events and a new layout; even the social events will have a new look and feel. Plan now to be a part of the first-ever AOPA Aviation Summit celebrating AOPA’s seventieth anniversary—you won’t want to miss it. Go online ( www.aopa.org/summit) to find out more.
