Women’s Air Race Classic starts June 23

More than 30 women’s pilot teams are set to begin the Air Race Classic, once known as the Powder Puff Derby, on June 23 from Centennial Airport near Denver.

The 2,359-nautical-mile course tours the nation’s mid-section with stops in Kansas, two in Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Illinois, and Wisconsin, finally ending in Atlantic, Iowa.

Some of the teams are using the event to raise money for charity and to demonstrate how to fly carbon-neutral. The team of Marijke Unger and Kara Pruitt will fly the route carbon-neutral by partnering with an organization called TerraPass.

TerraPass is a San Francisco-based organization that sells products and offers programs that collect fees to promote wind and solar energy and projects that reduce gases from landfills. The firm has a division devoted to carbon offsets for aviation.
