AOPA returns to Oshkosh with sweeps airplane, fun, and prizes
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) will return to Oshkosh this year with the Win a Six in '06 Sweepstakes airplane, prizes, and seminars.
"As the world's largest aviation association, it makes sense that AOPA annually attends Oshkosh, one of the largest gatherings of general aviation pilots and enthusiasts," said AOPA President Phil Boyer. "This year there will be AOPA prizes awarded daily, safety seminars, and opportunities for pilots to sign up for membership or renew."
The main attraction at AOPA's Big Yellow Tent will be the 2006 sweepstakes airplane - a 1967 Cherokee Six. It is sure to attract a crowd with its new avionics panel featuring an Avidyne EX500 multifunction display, XM Satellite Weather, S-Tec System Fifty-Five X autopilot, Sandel SN-3500 electronic horizontal situation indicator, and JP Instruments EDM-930 engine gauges. After Oshkosh, the Six will get a new paint job and a new interior. Anyone who joins or renews membership during 2006 will be eligible to win the better-than-new airplane in early 2007. Throughout the week at Oshkosh, members are encouraged to stop by AOPA's Big Yellow Tent to meet AOPA staff, pick up valuable information, and discuss the general aviation (GA) issues they care most about. Demonstrations will showcase AOPA's Real Time Flight Planner, AOPA Air Safety Foundation online safety courses, and the newest hot spot on the Web - AOPA Project Pilot. To participate in the program experienced pilots can sign up to become a Mentor, and prospective pilots can locate a Mentor, with this easy-to-use Web site. As always, AOPA staff members will be on hand to assist pilots who want to renew or sign up for membership. Everyone who does join, renew, or conduct some membership transaction at the AOPA Big Yellow Tent will receive the popular, limited edition AOPA airshow hat.
Anyone visiting AOPA's Big Yellow Tent is eligible to win daily prizes, either by wearing an AOPA sticker - available at the tent - and being spotted by AOPA's SurPrize Squad, or by stopping by the Big Yellow Tent to register to win great AOPA prizes.
The Air Safety Foundation will present four safety seminars including its latest production, "Emergency Procedures." Pilots who attend the presentation will learn how to keep abnormal situations from becoming full-blown emergencies, receive advice on keeping critical problems under control, and find out what they need to know about off-airport landings. Also new in 2006 and showing at Oshkosh is "Do the Right Thing - Decision Making for Pilots," which offers no-nonsense, real-world strategies that can help pilots avoid the cause of the majority of aviation accidents and lets the audience participate in the decision-making process for each scenario. Two other popular Air Safety Foundation seminars, "Single-Pilot IFR" and "The Last Five Miles," will also be presented during the week.
The more-than-408,000-member AOPA has represented the interests of general aviation pilots since 1939. GA includes all flying except the scheduled airlines and the military. Nearly two-thirds of all U.S. pilots, and three-quarters of the GA pilots, are AOPA members.
