June 5, 2004 - Three members of the Academia de Historia Aeronautica del Peru (Peruvian Academy of Aeronautical History) on Saturday presented AOPA President Phil Boyer with a medal and honorary membership in the academy for his role in promoting general aviation worldwide. Boyer also serves as the president of the International Council of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Associations (IAOPA).

Boyer thanked Academy President Gaston Garreaud, Maj. Gen. Oscar Gagliardi Kindliman (Peruvian Air Force retired), and Oscar Gagliardi, Jr., for the honor. "It is a real privilege to be recognized," said Boyer of the honor.

President Garreaud and Gen. Gagliardi are coauthors of a book on Jorge Chavez, a Peruvian pilot who in 1910 became the first person to fly across the Alps. Garreaud also presented Boyer with a picture from the Italian airfield that was Chavez's destination. Garreaud recently made a flight across the Alps to commemorate the Chavez flight.
