Parents listen in while daughter solos

Kate Opalewski

The first solo is one of a pilot's most memorable milestones. AOPA Project Pilot mentor Tim Clifford wanted to share that moment with his Project Pilot student—and daughter—Sarah.

Tim and his wife flew from Altamonte Springs, Fla., to Tampa for Sarah's solo. On their way, they heard her announce three landings over the radio.

"The calmness in her voice told me that we were early and her instructor was still at her side," he recalls.

That is until he heard Sarah's instructor congratulate her over the radio. Tim mentors Sarah over the phone because they live an hour apart. No doubt his reassurance helped calm her on the big day.
