Flight sims take off at Summit

AOPA Aviation Summit flight simulator sponsor Frasca International Inc. is giving you an opportunity to climb into the cockpit for a virtual flight at Summit.

Free simulator flights will be offered in at the AOPA Learn to Fly Centers and the Women’s Wing. Plus, find out more about flight simulator training with industry experts at Center Stage in the Tampa Convention Center exhibit hall.

Frasca builds a complete range of simulators for general aviation, as well as for military and commercial aviation, including the TruFlite and the Mentor. The company has built devices ranging from a Cessna 172 to a Boeing 737, including rotorcraft devices. Three Frasca simulators will be on site at Summit.

In the AOPA Learn to Fly Center in the exhibit hall at the Tampa Convention Center, take the controls of a Frasca Cirrus SR22 flight training device. The free flights will be provided by Glass Simulator Center of Sugar Grove, Ill.

In Airportfest’s AOPA Learn to Fly Center at Peter O. Knight Airport, free Frasca Cessna 172 Mentor flights will be provided by Epic Aviation of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Nonpilots can take a flight in the simulator before taking off on their first GA flight in the same or a similar model aircraft: Discovery flights will be provided by Cessna Pilot Centers and hosted by Atlas Aviation of Tampa in Cessna 172s and 182s for the special price of $70 in honor of AOPA’s seventieth anniversary

In the Women’s Wing, Frasca will provide free Piper Warrior flight training device flights. Those new to flying can get an expert introduction from National CFI of the Year Arlynn McMahon, who will be at the simulator from 2:30 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7.

On Thursday, Nov. 5, join AOPA Flight Training Deputy Editor Ian Twombly at Center Stage for a discussion with experts about how you can save time and money and increase your safety by training with flight sims. Frasca’s Randy Gawenda will discuss the company’s innovations and products; Lance Nuckolls from the FAA will talk about the regulatory aspect of integrating sim training; and Dr. Nickolas Macchiarella from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will discuss research into the effectiveness of flight sims in primary and instrument training.
