If you're just getting started in general aviation, you may be more focused on planning the next training flight or passing the next stage check than you are on the bigger picture of exploring what it means to be part of the GA community. That's certainly understandable, but it also means there's a good chance you're missing out on much of the fun, excitement, and opportunity that GA has to offer.
Flying, especially flight training, is somewhat solitary. Yes, you share the airplane with your instructor, but unless you're in an academy or university setting, you may spend very little time interacting with your fellow students or other pilots. If that's the case for you, it can be hard to really feel that you are part of something bigger than yourself. But, take it from me, you are.
Being part of something special, being part of the future, is what AOPA's Aviation Summit is all about. November 5 through 7 AOPA will host its first-ever Aviation Summit in Tampa, Florida, and it's going to be an aviation event like no other. For the first time at an AOPA convention, you'll have the chance to meet and interact with representatives from every element of aviation. We're even welcoming the public to come out and learn more about the world of GA.
Our expanded aircraft display will include everything from balloons to jets, and even remote-controlled aircraft. We'll also have a whole range of activities and displays on, above, and around Peter O. Knight Airport in Tampa.
Many of our other exciting activities will be located at the Tampa Convention Center, just a quick drive or boat ride away we'll provide the transportation. At the convention center you'll be able to see all the latest innovations in everything from headsets and training devices to airframes and avionics. Hundreds of companies will be on hand, so there's no better place to shop for all your aviation needs. The exhibit hall will also include a special Center Stage area where you can hear directly from aviation company leaders about their newest offerings.
Elsewhere around the convention center, you'll be able to participate in interactive forums on the topics that interest you the most. Learn more about aircraft ownership, honing your flying skills, earning the next rating, fun flying destinations, and more. With dozens of forums to choose from, you can pack a lot of learning into a few short days. You'll also have opportunities to get your individual questions answered by experts in everything from aviation law to medical certification and insurance; some issues can even be resolved on the spot.
Aviation Summit participants will also have the chance to take part in high-level discussions about the issues that affect our freedom to fly. Speakers will include leaders from AOPA as well as the heads of other aviation associations, top manufacturers, and the policy makers who help set the course for our future. They'll be on hand to talk about the big issues and address your concerns.
The issues are important, and the implications are serious, but GA is also about fun, and there's no better place to have fun than in a city such as Tampa when you're surrounded by thousands of fellow aviation enthusiasts. Get to know your fellow pilots and aviation enthusiasts at our great social events, ranging from concerts to cocktail receptions to a family-friendly dinner at Tampa's famous aquarium.
In addition to all the events that are part of AOPA Aviation Summit itself, we're offering other activities ranging from golf to shopping to dolphin cruises, making a trip to Summit an enjoyable weekend getaway for every member of the family, whether they fly or not.
Even with so much new going on, we've lowered the prices on many events and created registration packages for every budget, making it easier than ever to share the excitement of GA with family or friends.
There will be special opportunities just for students and instructors, so I hope you'll take time from your training schedule to enjoy a little fall break with us, and see just what a vibrant and exciting community you're part of. You can start your planning by visiting the Web site or calling us at 800-USA-AOPA. I can't wait to see you in Tampa!
