I’m not much of a joiner, but I recently joined the Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE). It’s an organization created by aviation educators to fulfill their very unique professional needs. SAFE’s mission is to foster professionalism and excellence in aviation through continuing education programs, establishment of professional standards, and accreditation initiatives.
This organization is the new kid on the block, but its members are anything but new to the game of aviation. In fact, SAFE’s membership roster is nothing less than a who’s who of aviation’s best and brightest educators. These are some of the most experienced flight training experts in the aviation business, and they’ve aligned themselves with this member-driven organization to promote aviation safety and flight training professionalism.
I’m speaking of flight instructors such as Doug Stewart, Alan Englehardt, Rich Stowell, Max Trescott, Arlynn McMahon, Mike Gaffney, Jeff Edwards, and many others whom I would like to mention but I simply don’t have the space to do so. They were at various times National Flight Instructors of the Year. How’s that for being in good company?
One of things I learned a long time ago is that if you want to become smart, you must associate with smart people. The same applies to being skilled, competent, professional, and wise. Joining SAFE allows you to make contact with some of aviation’s most capable educators and become a better educator because of it. That’s why any aviation educator, a flight or ground instructor, or someone who loves aviation education, will profit by becoming a member of this organization. Check out SAFE’s Web site.
