Online aviation auctions boost holiday fundraising

Build A Plane and Angel Flight Southeast are turning to eBay to raise funds this holiday season. Each group received donations to be auctioned on eBay, with the proceeds returning to the nonprofit groups to be used to further their aviation causes.

Build A Plane has offered an online auction in the past and says, “This is the place to go for the hard-to-buy-for pilot, as well as anyone wanting to support Build A Plane’s work for the coming year.” The auction will close Dec. 17 to allow items to be shipped to the bidders before Dec. 25. Build A Plane has assigned 170 donated airplanes to schools around the country and in India and Nigeria to give students an opportunity to learn about aviation and aerospace by building an airplane.

The online aviation charity auction is a first for Angel Flight Southeast, and aviation companies have stepped up to help.

“We have been overwhelmed at the support we have received from the aviation vendor community who are willing to help,” said Angel Flight Southeast President and CEO Blake Mathis. The group coordinates 3,000 to 4,000 missions each year, flying victims of natural disasters, veterans, battered spouses, and others for free thanks to volunteer pilots who give of their time and aircraft.

The funds from the online auction will be used to “assist in running the operation’s headquarters where a few staff members and dozens of volunteers take hundreds of calls weekly from families in need.”

Auction items are available for different lengths of time and include clothing, headsets, flight bags, and flight opportunities.
