This Weekend

Places to go, people to see, stuff to...eat!

Sometimes you just have to get out of the local traffic pattern. So make your next trip an adventure and use the airplane for a fun trip to an airport close to you, either by yourself for a confidence-building solo, or with an instructor as a great cross-country training adventure.

9VG

Campbell Field Airport, Weirwood, Virginia

Every Sunday, the folks at Campbell Field invite pilots to fly in to this Eastern Shore grass strip and enjoy “Soup on a Sunday.” The locals cook up hotdogs, soup (usually chili), and other goodies for only a $5 donation. Check online (www.campbellfieldairport.com) for updates.

M29

Hassell Field, Clifton, Tennessee

Fly in to Hassell Field and play what Golfweek magazine rated the best public course in the state—Ross Creek Landing. The course is a Nicklaus signature design, and features a pro shop and a restaurant. They’ll even leave a golf cart for you at the airport if you call ahead.

OSH

Wittman Regional Airport, Oshkosh, Wisconsin

Spend July 26 through August 1 at one of the world’s largest airshows, EAA AirVenture. AirVenture is a mass of every type of airplane and pilot you can think of. Fly in to Wittman, or chose a quieter airport close by. Really experience AirVenture by camping—pack your tent!

AID

Anderson Municipal, Anderson, Indiana

Anderson Municipal Airport/Darlington Field will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary July 10 and on hand will be Anderson's native son, pioneering pilot and space traveler Mike Melville. The hot dog and hamburger cookout benefits the Indiana State University Flight Team.

AHO

Homer Airport, Homer, Alaska

Alaska in the summer must be experienced to be appreciated. The same goes for the Two Sisters Bakery in Homer. Two Sisters is an institution in Homer, and for good reason. The pecan sticky buns and other baked goods are perfect after a flight, and the atmosphere is fun and offbeat.
