Sometimes you just have to get out of the local traffic pattern. So make your next trip an adventure and use the airplane for a fun trip to an airport close to you, either by yourself for a confidence-building solo, or with an instructor as a great cross-country training adventure.
Visit the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome any weekend beginning June 12 to see aviation history in action. Old Rhinebeck features World War I airplanes that fly in airshows all summer, weather permitting. Land at nearby Kingston-Ulster Airport and take a cab to the action.
Do you love ice cream? Of course you do. Fly to Merkel Field in Sylacauga, Alabama, and take a tour of the Blue Bell Creamery. For $3 you get to learn how the ice cream is made, and sample it too. Take a courtesy car from the airport.
It’s summer and that means baseball. Fly in to St. Louis Downtown Airport just across the river in Illinois and take a short taxi ride to catch the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. CPS is a busy airport underlying Class D, so it’s great congested-airspace training.
Come for the views and stay for the food. That’s the idea at Rickenbacker’s Bistro on the Ogden-Hickley Airport. The restaurant features an aviation theme, an extensive wine list, and a great view of the Wasatch Mountains for everyone.
Helicopter nuts should visit Boeing Field June 19 for a free helicopter airshow and static display. The American Heroes Air Show features military, emergency, news, and private helicopters. Helicopters start arriving at 7 a.m., but the event officially kicks off at 10 a.m.
