How to succeed in aviation

If you want to get ahead, you’ll need to be proactive so others will notice your abilities and give you that leg up you deserve. Here are some ideas:

Stand up: that means take the opportunity to go the extra mile. Volunteer to assist or get involved with your airport, FBO, flight school, flying club or, if none of them exist, start your own interest group at work or school. I have a friend who saw the need for his flight school’s foreign students to get out and see the wonders of the city around them. He organized day trips to special places he enjoyed such as the zoo and several other all-American fun spots. The students were delighted, told their friends, and soon the tours became a must-see part of the curriculum.

Stand out/speak out: Don’t just raise your hand, but have an idea behind that hand and a plan to put it to work. If your Boy or Girl Scout troops need help with their aviation badges, pitch right in and help them. If they don’t have plans to complete such a program, describe some of the benefits and volunteer to help them get started. After all, how did you get involved in aviation? It’s likely that someone offered you a hand and showed you the way.

Get noticed/get results: You need to publicize your efforts and that means talking about what you do, both in print and in public. Don’t be shy. The newspapers and Internet blog sites are hungry for heroes and you can interest them in your project or idea by putting together a good summary of your plan and presenting it to them.

If you can clearly define what you want and need, you’ll get noticed, get results, and get ahead. If you have a story of how you managed to rise about your peers and accomplish your goals, I’d like to hear it ([email protected]).
