Nate Foster took his checkride on a sweltering hot Thursday in August. Three days later, he took off from a Maryland airport in a 1975 Piper Super Cub and flew it to California. Foster, a high-school senior, completed the trip in the airplane that he helped to restore. Working with Andrew McFall, an A&P mechanic, Foster helped to re-cover the airplane’s wings, put in new upholstery, overhaul the engine, update the panel, and install vortex generators. He said he had been inspired to plan the trip after reading Rinker Buck’s Flight of Passage. Buck’s autobiography describes a 1966 journey with his 17-year-old brother Kernahan, in which they flew from New Jersey to California in a Piper Cub. Foster took eight days to complete the trip, staying an extra day in Nevada to wait out thunderstorms.
