Aviation terminology is full of abbreviations, and here’s a new one to stick in your flight bag: LUAW or “line up and wait.” What does it mean when you hear this ATC instruction while you’re on the taxiway waiting for your departure clearance? Instead of the familiar phrase “taxi into position and hold,” the controller will issue “line up and wait” instructions to indicate you may taxi onto the runway and wait for a takeoff clearance.
