This Weekend

Places to go, people to see, stuff to...eat!

Sometimes you just have to get out of the local traffic pattern. So make your next trip an adventure and use the airplane for a fun trip to an airport close to you, either by yourself for a confidence-building solo, or with an instructor as a great cross-country training adventure.

OXB

Ocean City Municipal Airport, Ocean City, Maryland

It may seem a bit offbeat to visit an Atlantic seaboard town in September, but for Ocean City it means all the fun but without the crowds—or the peak pricing. If you stay for a day, take the cheap taxi to the beach, or rent a car if staying overnight. The boadwalk is the place to be.

LOU

Bowman Field, Louisville, Kentucky

Fly in to Bowman Field September 24 through 26 for the unique Bluegrass Balloon Festival. The festival features more than 70 hot air balloons, flyovers featuring Army helicopters, bluegrass music, and more. Check for notams, and remember that balloons like to fly early and late in the day.

SN07

Beaumont Hotel Airport, Beaumont, Kansas

What’s better than a runway with a nice hotel and restaurant? The Beaumont Hotel in Beaumont, Kansas, ups the ante by allowing pilots to fly in, taxi up to the hotel, and park right out front. Imagine the coziness of a hotel room with a view of your airplane. Sounds like pilot heaven.

RTS

Reno/Stead Airport, Reno, Nevada

For one week in September the Biggest Little City in the World also becomes host to one of the fastest events in the world, the National Championship Air Races, held September 15 through 19. The races feature the world’s fastest propeller-driven aircraft, some jets, and an airshow.

ONO

Ontario Municipal Airport, Ontario, Oregon

Free breakfast and free admission await pilots who fly into the Ontario Air Faire on Saturday, September 11. The Air Faire features a half-dozen aerobatic routines, a car show, bands, warbirds on display, and vendors selling all sorts of fun things. That's a great deal for free.
