If you’ve wanted to ask air traffic controllers a question and did not know where to begin, ASI has paved the way. “Ask ATC,” developed in collaboration between the Air Safety Institute and the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA), offers you a firsthand glimpse into ATC’s workings and protocol. Use your Internet power to interact directly with ATC before your next flight to lift the curtain on things you wanted to ask, but were afraid to. Maybe you wonder about what would happen if you are on a solo cross-country flight and your microphone gets stuck? Don’t be shy, post your question directly to the controllers. Remember, ATC wants to help you. And they will be of great assistance if you have a problem and are not sure how to handle it. If you think it might be an emergency, say so. The reassuring voice at the other side of the mic will provide priority handling and immediate assistance such as diverting you to a closer airport. “Ask ATC” allows you to fully explore available ATC services for VFR and IFR flights. Here’s how it works:
• Visit www.airsafetyinstitute.org/askatc
• Check the list of available topics to see already-answered questions
• Don’t see your question? Just email [email protected]
• ATC’s answer to your question will be posted on the same website
Ask ATC! You’ll be glad you did.
