ANSWERS FOR PILOTS: Don’t let hypertension ground you

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a common condition for many Americans and, if not controlled, can result in your next airman medical application being deferred. FAA policy requires AMEs to defer applicants whose blood pressure exceeds 155/95. If your blood pressure does need to be controlled, many medications are acceptable to the FAA. If you are deferred, however, AOPA’s Medical Services Program can help you get your medical certificate. Magazine articles come to life with enhanced digital editions

Over the past several years, the editors of AOPA Pilot and Flight Training magazines have been adding more and more online extras—videos, additional interviews, slide shows, and the like—that readers have been able to access by visiting AOPA Online. This month, AOPA introduces digital editions of AOPA Pilot and Flight Training, which allow readers to access all of that extra material directly from the digital edition of their favorite magazines (see “ The Digital Option”).

When readers of the electronic edition open it online, they will see the same magazine as the print edition—the same layout, the same photos, the same articles. And they’ll be able to “flip” through the pages. But embedded within those pages will be many extras, such as videos and additional photos. Other features will include polls, surveys, extended content, links to social networking sites, and more. Members will be able to share articles with others. All Internet links included in articles will be “live,” so readers can go directly to the referenced website. And if readers see an ad for a product they’re interested in, in many cases they will be able to simply click the ad and go directly to the advertiser’s website. Best of all, the digital editions will be available on a variety of mobile devices, including the iPad, iPhone, Android tablet computers, Kindles, and cellphones, making them easily accessible to pilots living busy lifestyles.
