METARs, TAFs on demand

Finally, Twitter has a purpose. AVTweets is a new company offering METARs on demand via Twitter.

The process is fairly straightforward. Simply sign up for Twitter or log in to your account. Then go to the company’s website, put in the ICAO identifier for the airport you’re interested in, and click on the Twitter icon. There also are instructions on the site for how to sign up via text message.

When the tweets come, they are listed as the ICAO identifier with “awos” on the end. So, Teterboro Airport in New Jersey would be “KTEBawos.” Each time the report updates, the service sends out a tweet, which could include sending it to your Smartphone.

The service is free, and there’s no limit to the number of airports you can follow.

In addition to the Twitter-based service, the company is offering decoded METARs and TAFs on its website.
