The National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI) held its annual Oshkosh, Wis., breakfast on July 28, during which the association reaffirmed its close relationship with AOPA.
NAFI Chairman Ken Hoffman spoke at length about the long relationship between NAFI and AOPA, and how that relationship has helped to solidify NAFI’s future. Executive Director Jason Blair also mentioned the important work the groups do together, but stressed that NAFI’s position is strong representing flight instructors.
Blair then awarded the group’s annual Jack J. Eggspuehler award for excellence in aviation education. This year’s winner is Greg Laslo, the outgoing editor of NAFI’s Mentor magazine. “I don’t know anyone who has contributed to aviation education as much as Greg,” he said.
AOPA Vice President of Communications Andrew Broom gave the group an update on the Flight Training Student Retention Initiative, saying that while some people may just be blaming flight instructors for the current woes of flight training, “AOPA is not on board with that view.” Broom also mentioned the new AOPA flight training scholarships.
Finally, pilot-musician Ravi gave a presentation on selling the passion of flight training, saying that “flight training is access to someone’s dream.”
