Smooth the process of getting an aircraft loan

One of the benefits of securing an aircraft loan through AOPA’s partner, Bank of America N.A., is the preapproval process. According to Jennifer Giampietro, Bank of America senior vice president for aircraft financing, prospective owners often reverse the process. First they find an airplane; then they see if they qualify for the loan. She suggests that buying an airplane is far easier if you do those steps in reverse order.

Bank of America makes the preapproval process as easy as possible. Complete the online application and within 24 business hours, a Bank of America representative will telephone you with a decision. “That way, when you go out shopping for an airplane, you will know your price range,” Giampietro says. “Plus, you won’t get caught trying to buy an airplane that you won’t be approved for. If you know what airplane you want, we can tell you if we’ll finance it.”

In addition to providing preapproval for AOPA members, Bank of America will pay your annual AOPA membership dues for the life of the loan. On average, that equals about 10 years of paid dues—a $450 value.

Getting older does have its advantages—retirement looms on the horizon, with dreams of more hours to fly and the freedom to do what you want, where you want, and when you want. But, as life has it, there’s usually a list of drawbacks, too. For many pilots, as they experience an increase in one kind of mobility (traveling and wide-open schedules), they also deal with a decrease in another kind of mobility (flexible knees, hips, and shoulders). Arthritis affects nearly one in five adults, according to the Arthritis Foundation, and more than half of them have not yet reached age 65. If you notice it’s getting harder to reach the tie-down ropes, and you struggle to climb into the cockpit, you may be dealing with arthritis. How does it affect an airman medical certificate? What should you report if you go to your doctor for treatment? The good news is that mild arthritis will usually not keep you from flying, but there are some reporting requirements the next time you visit your AME.
