Time is right for getting back into flying

Whether it’s been a few months, a few years, or a few decades since you last flew, now is the time to get back into flying. Long summer days provide ample training time, and a new program called “Welcome Back, Pilots” offers a Web page with special discounts to help ease the cost.

The Web page includes an offer for a 10- to 25-percent discount on certain flight hours at a Cessna Pilot Center, a Sporty’s VFR refresher kit, a Sporty’s camp for pilots, a J.A. Air Center flight review, and a Piper deal that offers to buy your next rating if you buy an Archer LX.

In addition to the services and incentives on the “Welcome Back, Pilots” Web page, pilots looking to get back into flying can find resources on AOPA Online as well. AOPA covers how to find a flight instructor, decide what kind of aircraft to fly, get your medical certificate and a flight review, and brush up on the regulations and airspaces changes that have taken place since you last flew.

AOPA also breaks the information down into the time periods when you last piloted an aircraft: 1990 to 1999, 2000 to 2002, 2003 to 2006, and 2007 to 2010. However, it’s helpful to review the changes that have taken during each of those time frames.

If you have specific questions about getting back into flying, call AOPA’s Pilot Information Center specialists at 800/USA-AOPA weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.
