Sun ‘n Fun: Planning a spring break trip

Sun n Fun

Spring training. White sand beaches. Florida is a hot destination this time of year for baseball fans and college students. But this week, it will also be destination No. 1 for pilots.

Sun ‘n Fun in Lakeland, Fla., has long been celebrated as the pilot’s spring break and the kickoff to the flying season. Each year thousands of pilots fly in to camp out, swap stories with fellow aviators, take in the airshow, and increase their knowledge at forums.

But, the fun must start with a safe arrival. Pilots planning to fly into Lakeland Linder Regional Airport should review the Sun ‘n Fun arrival procedures and study the 2011 notam. The Sun ‘n Fun website also provides information for warbird arrivals, aircraft parking, and more.

Whether this flight will be the first after a winter hibernation or a routine cross-country, play it safe with the increase in air traffic in the central Florida area and review the Air Safety Institute’s Runway Safety and Know Before You Go: Navigating Today’s Airspace online courses.

While planning the flight to Sun ‘n Fun, use the AOPA Internet Flight Planner, which incorporates weather and temporary flight restrictions into the map, and AOPA Airports, complete with runway data, FBO information, fuel prices, and more.

With proper planning, the flight and arrival can be as enjoyable as the show!
