The Corporate Angel Network, a group that coordinates medical travel for cancer patients on corporate aircraft, is honoring ConocoPhillips for flying nearly 6,000 cancer patients to treatment centers since 1983. The organization will present its first Angel of the Year Award to ConocoPhillips on Oct. 11 during the annual National Business Aviation Association convention in Las Vegas.
ConocoPhillips was selected for its “leadership in mixing business activity with programs of social responsibility.”
“We’re proud to be part of Corporate Angel Network and honored to receive this award,” ConocoPhillips Chairman and CEO Jim Mulva said in a news release. “Corporate Angel does an exceptional job helping cancer patients across the U.S. obtain transportation to the treatment they need. ConocoPhillips’ longstanding participation in this remarkable program stems from a deeply felt commitment to the people in the communities where we live and work. Our participation also extends the value of our aviation assets and gives us a very tangible and frequent opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people in need.”
Corporate Angel Network took a hit in 2009 during the economic recession and downturn in business aviation. However, corporations filled open seats on their aircraft during business trips and flew a network-record 3,021 cancer patients to needed medical treatment last year. The network has coordinated more than 36,000 flights since it started in 1981 and has 530 participating corporations.
