Tech Tip

Get a head start

Get the required info before you start the engine

If you are flying out of a tower-controlled airport, you’ll need to obtain the automated terminal information service, or ATIS, before calling ground control to taxi. Save yourself some stress and money and get this information before you start the engine. When you turn on the master switch to lower the flaps, check the lights, and check the fuel gauges, tune the radio to the ATIS and write down the information.

If the airport has clearance delivery, you can call clearance before starting, or even store a route of flight in a GPS. Some larger airplanes have a dedicated switch that turns on just the radios and navigation equipment for this very purpose. Just be careful not to run down the battery, especially in winter.
