Aviation Design hand stitches leather yoke covers.
It’s a labor of love for Aviation Design’s Tim Hallock. He personally sews the leather seat, side panel, and yoke covers the Groveland, Calif., company produces for Beechcraft Barons and Bonanzas.
His company uses sturdy, lightweight kydex side panels that recess into the airframe to provide more cockpit room for the pilot and passengers. The side panels were so popular among Bonanza and Baron owners that in 2004 he refurbished 10 new aircraft. Now, Hawker Beechcraft installs his kit on their new production aircraft; his company has received Hawker’s gold product excellence award for the kits.
Aviation Design also makes carbon fiber headliners, tables, floor boards, and more. But it’s not just lightweight, space saving materials that make owners seek his handiwork. It’s also the attention to detail—like hand-stitched yoke covers and placards transferred onto leather.
His work was on display during AOPA Aviation Summit in Palm Springs, Calif., in the aircraft display outside the convention center. A 1990 Baron the was refurbished this year sports a new interior from Aviation Design, engine and avionics from Woodland Aviation, and paint job by Arizona Aero Painting.
