Honor Flight salutes veterans

  • A younger generation learns the importance of honoring our veterans.
  • Fifi is the main attraction during the EAA AirVenture Honor Flight Aug. 2.
  • A B-29 and B-25s fly over EAA AirVenture during Honor Flight.
  • A wall of fire timed with the warbird overflight ends Honor Flight with a bang.

As the B-29 Fifi and three B-25 North American Mitchell bombers flew overhead at EAA AirVenture for a missing man salute, a hush fell over the crowd while taps played through loudspeakers.

The missing man flyover, other formation flights that included torpedo bombers, and a “wall of fire” timed for the finale paid respect to veterans Aug. 2 during an Honor Flight ceremony in Oshkosh, Wis.

Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band paid tribute to current military personnel and veterans later that evening during a free concert at Phillips 66 Square. The band performs worldwide and on military bases. Sinise, who played Mac Taylor on the TV series CSI:NY, said he has made it his mission to honor those in the military since he portrayed Lt. Dan in the movie Forrest Gump.
