One of the harder skills that is developed over time in cross-country flying is visualizing runway orientations. Putting the heading bug on the corresponding runway number can help, but modern technology serves it up on an even shinier silver platter.
If your airplane has a Garmin GNS 430, 530, or G1000 you can make it draw an extended runway centerline by doing the following:
1. Set the airport as active waypoint and go Direct To.
2. Set your course deviation indicator (CDI) or horizontal situation indicator (HSI) to the runway heading.
3. Press OBS on the GPS.
