Runway closure promises delays at Ft. Lauderdale

The Broward County Aviation Division is alerting pilots to expect arrival and departure delays up to an hour during high-volume periods after Runway 13/31 at Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is permanently closed May 6.

The decommissioning of the runway will leave the airport, which serves both commercial and general aviation flights, with only one operational runway until the new south parallel runway 10R/28L is operational in the fall of 2014.

A letter to airmen notes that all aircraft, including GA aircraft arriving on VFR flight plans, will be sequenced together, and should expect delays equivalent to what other users are expecting. Movement area closures will be depicted on a new product called “Airport Construction Notices,” accessible, along with notams, on the FAA digital notam website. Officials stressed the need for thorough preflight planning—including a check on the most up-to-date notams—to maintain safety and situational awareness.
