The solar-powered Solar Impulse aircraft continued its U.S. tour May 3, departing San Francisco for a flight over the Golden Gate Bridge before heading to its next stop in Phoenix.
The Across America mission is part of an effort to make Solar Impulse the first solar airplane capable of flying day and night without fuel to fly across the country. The 19-hour flight will take the Solar Impulse from Moffett Federal Field in Mountain View, Calif., to Fresno, Bakersfield, Barstow, Mojave National Preserve, Joshua Tree National Park, and finally, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
The flight is being live streamed via the Solar Impulse website, and being followed on Facebook and Twitter. The aircraft’s position, altitude, and speed will be shown live and cameras fitted inside the cockpit and at Mission Control Center, the mission’s nerve center, will allow followers to experience the adventure live.
