Fly to another world

island

Islands offer a fun respite from daily life, but they often are difficult to reach. Most people either take a boat or ferry—or if the island is big enough, airline service. Being a pilot means having unparalleled access to some far-out destinations, including many islands throughout the United States.

Flying to an island is great fun and a perfect adventure for a long cross-country. It’s also a great training opportunity. Additional planning is required for overwater flights, including an expectation of unique weather and wind patterns and a series of new emergency procedures. All of this is a great way to think critically about your preparedness for any other flight, as well.

If you can make it to a great island destination, don’t just land and taxi back. Get a cab, ride a bike, or walk to a restaurant. That experience in training will give you the confidence to repeat the flight with close friends or family in the future.
