Developers offer app, mobile website updates

This week, developers provide updates on apps that have been reviewed previously. Entries come from Sporty’s, GlobalAir.com, Garmin, and FltPlan.com. These are not endorsements of any app.

Sporty’s FAR/AIM ($9.99 in iTunes)—This iPhone and iPad app gives users access to the FAR/AIM, which contains information from Titles 14 and 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations pertinent to pilots, flight instructors, and flight crew, combined with the Aeronautical Information Manual, and Pilot/Controller Glossary. Features include text search, the ability to highlight any selection of text and save it for quick access later, and free updates.

GlobalAir.com FBO Fuel Prices ($3.99 in iTunes)—This app, optimized for the iPhone 5, allows users to search for the latest FBO fuel prices. Now it features the ability to use GPS to view and compare prices in regions.

Garmin Pilot (free in iTunes and Google Play, but subscription required)—This iPhone and iPad app handles functions including flight planning, DTC DUAT and CSC DUATS filing, charts, interactive maps, weather briefing resources, and navigation capabilities. The app has been  updated to feature synthetic vision as an option for premium subscribers; 3-D Vision incorporates GPS-derived airspeed, altitude, and vertical speed overlaid on a 3-D topographic landscape.

Garmin GLO for Aviation ($129.00)—While this technically isn’t an app, this device combines GPS/GLONASS receivers with Bluetooth technology so you can get precise position information on your smartphone or tablet. It also serves as a perfect companion to the Garmin Pilot app on iOS and Android. Using Bluetooth technology, GLO pairs to up to four devices at a time, with a battery life of up to 12 hours.

FltPlan.com (free, but subscription required)—Again, while not an app, this flight planning website is available on smartphones and tablets. And the website is now approved for submitting Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS) manifests to comply with the Mexican government's new regulations designed to improve its ability to process individuals entering and exiting the country.

Many thanks for the Android and Windows apps. Please keep sending them here. For an upcoming column, I’d like to know about the one aviation app that is a must-have on your smartphone or tablet. See the complete list of apps already reviewed here.
