Commercial test prep, FAR/AIM apps released

New apps for iOS and Android help prepare pilots for the commercial pilot knowledge test and give users access to the federal aviation regulations and Aeronautical Information Manual.

Pilot Training Solutions’ Commercial Pilot Virtual Test Prep App for iPad, now available in the App Store, presents topics using audio, video, images, and animations and tests users’ knowledge with quizzes after each chapter. Aviation Supplies & Academics’ FAR/AIM app also was recently released for Android devices.

The Commercial Pilot Virtual Test Prep App includes more than 10 hours of interactive learning, according to Pilot Training Solutions, with an emphasis on understanding rather than question-and-answer memorization. Users may navigate the nine chapters of material in order or choose the ones they need. After viewing the material, pilots may take practice tests that use FAA questions presented in a layout similar to the FAA’s testing programs, Pilot Training Solutions CEO Gian Luca (“Lucas”) Noia said.

“Many of the pilots adding a commercial certificate to their ticket do so just for fun and personal achievement,” Noia told AOPA in an email. Those pilots have been “out of the game” for so long, however, that passing the knowledge test becomes a tedious process, he added. “Our Commercial Pilot Virtual Test Prep App is just what they need to get back in the game and put this necessary evil behind them.”

He said that career-track pilots may also save money on ground school with the app, which is $99 on iTunes. Pilots who purchase the All-In-One Commercial package of online software, downloaded software, testing software, and soon-to-be released checkride test prep software this April will receive the app for free.

FAR/AIM

The Android ASA FAR/AIM app contains relevant portions of titles 14 and 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations as well as the Aeronautical Information Manual and Pilot/Controller Glossary. Features include free updates, a text search, highlighting, and a quick reference tool for important sections relevant to a particular certificate. It also is available for iOS.
